The goal: Here is the scene: I am your busy manager. You are a first year hire. I was handed this 32 page paper on Fit-Bit. I don’t want to read it and break it down. That is your job. I have to present this overview of the case study in a meeting in 5 days. Tell me what this case study is about and hand me a paper no longer than 5 pages, add a one page summary, so I can present the salient points in the meeting. Oh, I don’t need to know the history of FitBit as a company. You can skip that. Thank you. End scene.

You will read many themes, and main points in the Fit Bit Paper. Your job, IE. What you are being graded on is:

1. How well you identify the main themes or points of the whole case study. And write them simply and right to the point in your writing. (You should recognize these, they should “jump” out at you.)

2. No part of Narrative or Back Story is in your paper. Any narrative or backstory is not a main theme or point. It is just that back story.

3. The above and below are done in 5 pages. And a one page summary.

4. Your writing skill. Here is a tip. Use Paragraphs!!!

5. Tip: If you do a good outline. Look at your outline and say. Yes, I have the main points here. I have explained the main points, here. If not continue the work on the outline.

6. Lastly. I am looking for the “why does it matter?”. What are your thoughts on the main points? IE. Alex was a tough leader. So what? Why does it matter? Her team will not like her? So what? Why does it matter? This is the end goal: “Alex is a tough leader who does get results, however, she can be hostile toward her team. [Don’t stop writing here] This can lead to overall poor performance by her team, they can react with fear. This can cause errors, mistakes, and ultimately slow down the product launch and hurt the company….”

7. Another tip. The skill you are using here, is not how MUCH you can write, but how well you can take a lot of information being thrown at you and boil it down to its essential points.
