Using the Interactive Whiteboard and Discuss with Students

Fine arts in schools is an affluent source of culture which can bring wonders in classrooms – but why limit the art to paintings and sculptures only? Instead, teachers can utilize the power of technology and work upon art creatively by linking it with math, science, engineering, history and other subjects. This can help to save a lot of time and energy and also improve the learning of students.  Here are some of the ways which can help you a lot:

  1. Picasso Faces: The style of painting called Cubism was introduced by Pablo Picasso, in France in the year 1907. The cubists, or painters painted the figures which were based on geometric shape – the cubes, cylinders, cones, and more – it appears as if they were cut up and stick together to make a painting. The teacher can display a Picasso figure on the interactive whiteboard and call upon the students to trace over the geometric shapes and angles according to their perceptions. Next, the students will construct their own cubist figures using different colored papers. They can also make portraits of their own classmates by gluing the pieces together.
  2. Twisting and turning: The mobile or cell phone has been invented by Alexander Calder, an American sculptor. For him, mobile was a structure which dangled from above and whose parts can be moved to balance each other in synchronization. Share the images with the whole classroom. Ask the students to work together in pairs and chalk out a plan – that is physics! The whole plan can be displayed on the projector and camera, further ask the kids to vote on whether which mobile can balance correctly or not.
  3. Mirrored mapping: Escher was a Dutch graphic designer who explored different concepts in the subjects of math and supplement engineering through the art. He conducted researches on different perspectives and love to view them tweaking or evolving. He also supplemented his ideas by using the spherical balls or the distorted mirrors to view things from various angles. Escher drawings are available on the internet and can be used to discuss on different perspectives by viewing the spheres. Next, ask the students to view the classroom by using different mirrors, panes of glass and magnifying mirrors. Then draw the whole classroom in a new manner.Display the whole masterpiece by using the interactive whiteboard and discuss with students.
  4. Let there be color: An Italian painter Michaelangelo, studied about the light and dark interaction in the real world. When he studied about light, he came to know that colors cannot only be used for the purpose of decoration, but also a way by which light is perceived in the real world. Students can be given projects on colors and linked with science by manipulating the light and color in the classrooms. By covering the bulb with the piece of colored cloth, various activities can be designed. By placing different objects under the camera, the changes in the appearance of the objects can be discussed in class depending upon the color of light.
