Individual Research Project: Part III Instructions:

 

One of your greatest resources for learning is talking to others or assessing the actual communication of someone else.  Identify someone who has an opinion on the ethical and socially responsible (or unethical and socially irresponsible) behaviors of the organization and arrange to either conduct an informational interview or using the internet to locate a speech or interview granted by the individual.  Based on your interview or on your research you are to:

 

 

 

1.    Write a short biography for the professional you interviewed or researched (1-2 Paragraphs).  The biography is to include the person’s name, title, company or organization, role and responsibilities, education, previous positions and fields of work, professional organizations, etc.

 

2.    Indicate why this person is significant or important for understanding the organizational (Starbuck’s) behavior you are addressing in your research project. (1-2 Paragraphs)

 

3.    Summarize your findings in three or four (3-4) paragraphs (approximately 400-600 words). 

 

4.    Write your work in report format; do not just hand in a transcript (Q & A summary) of your interview or research.

1. Find the derivative with respect to x for the following functions.

 

a. f (x)= ax³+ bx²+x;

 

b. f(x)=ax ln x;

 

2. What is the price elasticity of the demand curve Q (p) = a – b ln (p)?

 

3. Suppose that the demand for water balloons fit the function D(p,p_s)= .2 p^-0.5p_s^-0.2; where p is the price of water balloons and ps is the price of super soakers (an advanced squirt gun technology).

 

Based upon this demand curve, are super soakers a compliment or a substitute for water balloons? Demonstrate why.

 

4. Suppose that the current price of oil is $60 per barrel and the quantity sold is 90 million barrels per day. Assume that the supply and demand curves for oil are linear. The current estimates of the price elasticity of supply and demand in the U.S. are η = 1 and ε = – .2 respectively. Assume that the supply and demand curves for oil are linear. In other words, supply can be expressed as S(p) = a + bp, and demand as D(p) = e – fp.

 

a. Derive a and b, the horizontal (quantity) intercept and slope of the supply curve .

Now assume that the U.S. government has decided to purchase an additional 2 million barrels of oil per day and put it into the strategic petroleum reserve. In other words, this additional oil is pumped into the ground and not circulated in the existing U.S. oil market.

 

c. Draw (using supply and demand curves) the impact of this new government policy on the U.S. oil market.

 

d. Calculate the new equilibrium price resulting from the government’s new policy.

Social Behavior and Monkeys

American psychologist, Harry Harlow, conducted a famous experiment that demonstrated the importance of caregiving and companionship in the social development of monkeys. For this assignment, watch this video about the Harlow monkey experiment.

Next, observe the social behavior of monkeys by watching the monkey exhibit at your local zoo for at least 10 minutes. If you are unable to visit a zoo, you may watch this video of monkeys in a zoo environment. This video is also found in this week’s M.U.S.E. material. While observing the monkeys, put on your “sociologist hat,” and note the interactions and behaviors that you see.

Answer the following questions in a paper of 800–1,000 words:

• How did the monkeys interact with one another?
• How is the social behavior and social interaction of monkeys similar to the behavior of humans?
• Why do you think humans need social interaction?
• What did you learn from conducting field observation research? What do you think of this as a methodology?

3. Assume the original facts except the land was valued at $115,000 instead of $120,000. What is Lockhart’s built-in gains tax in 2013?  Be sure to show your work.
