Review Case 28 “The rise and fall of Eastman Kodak: Will it survive beyond 2012?” located in the textbook. Assume that you have been hired by Kodak as a business consultant to recommend a new corporate-level strategy for the company to improve declining sales, increase profitability, and expand the company to the Cloud service industry.

 

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

 

1.      Establish five (5) key objectives for Eastman Kodak that encompasses the operational, financial, human resource aspects of the business. Next, argue that each of the established objectives is essential to the success of the company within the Cloud service industry.

2.      Analyze Kodak’s horizontal and vertical integration strategy and determine the corporate level strategy that is more appropriate for the company to establish a competitive advantage in the Cloud service industry. Provide a rationale for the determination.

3.      Determine five (5) ways in which pursuing a multi-business model based on diversification may increase profitability for the company. Provide at least two (2) examples of such use of a multi-business model from industry to support the rationale.

4.      Recommend one (1) implementation strategy for Eastman Kodak that considers organizational design, strategic control systems, structure, and the type of organizational culture fitting for the organization and its new industry. Justify the recommendation.

5.      Speculate on the way in which both the corporate-level strategy and the implementation strategy you recommended in Question 2 and Question 4 would support ethical business behaviors. Analyze the significant manner in which ethics, corporate social responsibility, and environmental sustainability impact the implementation of the strategies that you have recommended.

6.      Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar type Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

This week, the way we conduct a discussion will be different from the first three discussions.  I want us to look at a very important economic issue that we hear about almost weekly, the U.S. government budget.  Many political leaders argue that the federal government should be forced to balance the budget each fiscal year.  They argue that the only way to accomplish this is to amend the U.S. Constitution to include a provision that requires that the national budget be balanced every year.  Should the national budget be balanced every year is the question?  There are many websites arguing for and against this issue, three of them are listed in the panel above.  I want you to research these websites and compose your argument.  It must be an economic argument.  What could happen if the federal government has to balance the budget at all times, and during all economic times, good and bad?

In your first post, if your last  name begins with A to L, you are to argue that the U.S. Constitution should be amended to include a balanced budget requirement and provide your reasons for this position.  If your last name begins with M to Z, you are to argue that the Constitution should not contain an amendment requiring a balanced budget and provide the reasons for your argument.

In your second post, if you are in the A to L group, you must counter the argument of someone in the M to Z group (be sure to name them).  If you are in the M to Z group, you must counter the argument of someone in the A to L group and remember to name them.

Assignment 1: The Apportionment Problem

You are a census officer in a newly democratic nation and you have been charged with using the census data from the table below to determine how 100 congressional seats should be divided among the 10 states of the union.

Being a fan of United States history, you are familiar with the many methods of apportionment applied to this problem to achieve fair representation in the US House of Representatives. You decide that apportionment (chapter 11, sections 1-4 in your textbook) is the best approach to solving this problem, but need to compare several methods and then determine which is actually fair.

1. Using the Hamilton method of apportionment, determine the number of seats each state should receive.
2. Using the numbers you just calculated from applying the Hamilton method, determine the average constituency for each state. Explain your decision making process for allocating the remaining seats.
3. Calculate the absolute and relative unfairness of this apportionment.
4. Explain how changes in state boundaries or populations could affect the balance of representation in this congress. Provide an example using the results above.
5. How and why could an Alabama Paradox occur?
6. Explain how applying the Huntington-Hill apportionment method helps to avoid an Alabama Paradox.
7. Based upon your experience in solving this problem, do you feel apportionment is the best way to achieve fair representation? Be sure to support your answer.
8. Suggest another strategy that could be applied to achieve fair representation either using apportionment methods or a method of your choosing.

Scenario #3: The Situation: On one hot sunny morning with mid day temperatures already climbing into the ‘80’s one of your front-end loader operators is making his normal rounds and stops by a local motel to service the dumpster. He stops his truck and gets out and opens the dumpster enclosure. When he does he notices that the motel’s kitchen is still leaving their used kitchen grease container within the confines of the dumpster enclosure. This time the 275 gallon grease container is fairly close to the dumpster, but the driver figures he can dump the container without striking the grease container, but it will be close. The driver gets back into the truck and starts it up just as he receives a call on his cell phone. It’s his live-in girlfriend who wishes to continue last nights fight. The ensuing agreement distracts the driver long enough to cause him to catch a corner of the kitchen grease container spilling approximately 210 gallons (the container was approximately 75% full at the time of the incident) of used kitchen grease all over the asphalt. The Questions: What are the immediate actions of the driver? Does the kitchen grease need to be cleaned up and if so, how? Are the motel owner/operators incorrect by storing the grease in the dumpster enclosure? If so, what should have been done to correct it? Will the used kitchen grease damage the asphalt?
