Project Title: Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Business
Submission date: Wednesday 25.11.2015 by 23:59 (No deadline extensions)
Submission format: Written Report (2000 words) highlights of the project are to be briefly
presented in class
Submission method: Upload to Turn-it-in on Blackboard
Aims and Objective
This final individual project report Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Business builds on the
formative assessment and should reflect your ability to consolidate your knowledge and
understanding of the key concepts and tools learned throughout the module and whilst being free to
express your creativity in a medium term future context.
The project consists of developing a scenario for a sustainable business set 45 years ahead in 2060.
You should provide a rationale for a future business that is plausible and that offers an innovative
solution to a set of identified difficult environmental and social challenges that might exist at that time.
The aim of scenario planning is to help you gain insights into how business can plan for the future in
an uncertain world in the far medium term. The business scenario should be supported by emerging
and future trends related to the chosen business sector and take into account environmental
limitations and the socio-political issues; alongside a strategy for sustainable innovation that could
provide value creation and competitive advantage for a business at that time.
The aim is to demonstrate understanding of the complex issues risks and opportunities business face
and apply the appropriate knowledge as well as creative and entrepreneurial thinking to reach
convincing solutions for a sustainable global business. The future setting will allow you greater
creative freedom. However you are also expected to document your rationale using currently credible
sources and bibliography based both on key readings on the module as well as in your individual
research.
Task
You will refine your initial research findings building on your research for the formative assessment
(see the brief for the formative assessment) to present a sustainable business scenario set in year
2060. The sustainable business scenario will be based on research into the geo-political socioeconomic
legal and environmental factors affecting a nation; an industry; and your chosen business
and provide a response and adapt to the major challenges you will have identified in terms of
environmental risks and socio-political issues that pose a direct risk to the company and its
community. You should aim to research and demonstrate:
? How industry standards and country/government laws and regulations will affect business
decisions in terms of sustainability at a global and local level.
? How environmental factors such as: fresh water shortage waste land-use climate change
pollution and bio-diversity loss will impact a selected business/ industry the most alongside
economic and/or demographic factors.
? How scenario planning can help formulate a strategy for sustainable innovation that will provide
value creation and competitive advantage.
? Optionally referencing how business leaders and global corporations use emerging and future
trends to inform future visions and plans (see reports from the EU UN and various organisations
such as Unilever Volkswagen or Shells plans for 2050).
You will demonstrate that you can apply the appropriate knowledge (concepts methods and tools
introduced and explored in the lectures and seminars) through research and analytical evaluation.

use selected quotes from any source you must indicate the source properly. All quotes and
resources used in the report must be referenced using the standard Harvard system (see the Student
College Handbook for guidance). Make sure the sources are relevant to your topic and what you
write. For good practice you should aim to have a minimum of 7-8 sources of which 3 should be from
the RULDiscovery database.
In Class presentation:
As part of your assessment you have to perform a brief in class presentation of the main
section of your report for a minimum duration of 3 minutes. That is you must perform if you
are to pass the module. However the quality of your presentation will not count towards your
assessment. It is good practice to learn to present your work to a group of your peers. It will be
interesting for them to understand in a structured way what you have been working on. You can
present in any format that is both visual and audible. If you have not finished your presentation it will
be stopped at 7 minutes.

Compare and contrast the cultures of some of the English colonies.

Discussion Question #1: Compare and contrast the cultures of some of the English colonies.

Discussion Question #2: Which English colony would you have liked to have lived in? Why?

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHETHER YOU AGREE WITH MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTION AND WHY? (A MININUM OF 150 WORDS)
CLASSMATE’S POST

Discussion Question #1: Compare and contrast the cultures of some of the English colonies.
The English Colonies I choice to compare are the Mid Atlantic colonies and the New English colonies. Both of the colonies had a good population growth. The Mid Atlantic Colonies had seen a vast difference in the settlers that came to the land. The Mid Atlantic had seen settlers come from a number of different lands like German, Netherlands, Scotland and Ireland. I was surprised about the amount of different areas that settled. As I was reading over the original thirteen colonies I had come across ones I had never heard of The Tobacco Colonies. The Colonies were founded when King James had divided the Atlantic Seaboard in two this giving way to the London Company. I was unsure with the reading if this was the colonies that had become to know as the Roanoke Colony that by 1590 had vanished entirely with no knowledge of what had happened. I would be interested to find out if it was ever uncovered if the Colony had succumb to disease famine or nature.

Discussion Question #2: Which English colony would you has liked to have lived in? Why?
The English Colony that I would have chosen to live in would have to be the New England colonies. I feel like the size of the Colonies would have been the best chance for survival, they were progressive, diverse as well as knowledge with farming and trade. I feel like with my knowing that I have today I am very willing to learn and this type of personality could go a long way when you are starting a colony.

What is cyber crime?

Give an example of major global crimes. How do these crimes and other criminal issues impact global criminal justice systems? How can we improve the overall effectiveness of strategies employed to combat these global crimes and criminal issues? Explain.
Terrorism is an ongoing issue, and unfortunately there does not appear to be an end in sight. What are some ways to combat it? Have we been effective in our efforts so far?
Human trafficking has, unfortunately, been an issue for a very long time (and it continues to be a serious problem around the world). It seems that the only way to combat this issue is to work with other countries, some of which may not prioritize the issue. Have we done enough on that front?
What is cyber crime? How does the sophistication of cyber crime impact and affect worldwide justice systems? How can we improve the global fight against cyber crime? Explain.
As you note, law enforcement seems to always be a step behind and also lagging in cyber skills. Your idea of going after hackers/cybercriminals digitally is interesting. In practice, how would that work; what do you think should be done?
As you note, the anonymous and international nature of many cybercrimes make enforcement very difficult. Some countries do not cooperate, making arrests almost impossible. What can the U.S. do to try to improve this situation?
When we are talking about prosecuting organized crime activity, it requires a different strategy than prosecuting a “run of the mill” burglar. So can the class give an example of a successful prosecution against organized crime? How effective are the current laws and statutes that aid in organized crime prosecutions? What changes to these laws and statutes would you suggest be made to improve the effectiveness of prosecution?

I can speak to this issue a little bit based on personal experience in the field. I do know that prosecutions of gangs and organized criminals are difficult due to the intimidation factor that organized crime presents. By intimidating witnesses (and victims), the gang can control what statements witnesses give to the police at the very beginning of an investigation, as well as what they “recall” during testimony at trial; many victims and witnesses become very forgetful when they know their personal safety, or those of their loved ones are in jeopardy. Imagine yourself preparing to testify against a gang member, while going home and seeing strange cars sitting with occupants making “firing a gun” gestures at you…what would you do?

The setting for the story is the fictional boys’ school, Brookfield. It is thought to be based on the Leys school in Cambridge, England, which the author James Hilton attended. However the real-life inspiration for Brookfield is perhaps of secondary importance. What really matters is that Brookfield is a rather idealised location, which is in keeping with the book’s overall sentimental tone, as the title character looks back over his life with a sense of fond nostalgia. Most of all the book is a kind of lament for a vanished way of life, in England before the catastrophe of the First World War.

Describe two ways in which the proposed budget cut might impact intergovernmental leadership and explain how.

Intergovernmental Issues and Budgets

Intergovernmental relations is a system in which multiple government agencies in a common geographical area share power with each other. This system gives substantial power to different levels of government. The result may create conflicts and issues among multiple government agencies, and strong leaders must consider how to manage these conflicts effectively. At times, intergovernmental relations can develop stronger management among multiple government agencies. Consider the following question: Do intergovernmental relations force more collaborative governance in leadership?
One intergovernmental issue to consider is budget cuts. Budgetary constraints and cuts impact not only government agencies but communities as well. For example, if federal funding is cut from educational programs enacted by federal policies and programs, it can force the consolidation of programs and leadership roles. It may also impact communities, forcing public administrators to deal with the community backlash.

For this Application Assignment, review the virtual community and consider how intergovernmental issues such as budget cuts impact leaders and communities.

To prepare for this assignment:

Review the article, “A Mixed Method Look at State Growth Management Policy.” Consider the implications of expanding leadership.
Review the article, “Financing Infrastructure in the 21st Century City.” Think about how budgetary issues impact government agencies and communities.
Review the article, “Adapting Intergovernmental Management to the New Age of Terrorism.” Pay particular attention to the effectiveness of intergovernmental governance in management.
Review the article, “Thinking Harder About Outcomes for Collaborative Governance Arrangements.” Reflect on the impact of intergovernmental management.
Review the video presentation of this week’s news broadcast in the virtual community and the reactions from other parties around town.
Consider how the budget cuts may affect your role as head of a public agency and how you might address the budget cuts or changes in your role.
Consider how intergovernmental issues apply to multiple roles in the community.

The assignment (2 pages) Due by Sunday 3-25-18

Review the virtual community from the perspective of your role of the head of a public agency.
Describe two ways in which the proposed budget cut might impact intergovernmental leadership and explain how.
Explain from the perspective of your selected role as the head of a public agency whether or not you support the proposed budget cut and justify your response.
Be specific and use examples to illustrate your points.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.
