apply statistics discussion

*Choose one statistical tool that you read about this week.

Consider a decision you need to make at work or at home.

Explain how this tool will help you make that decision.

Levels of Measurement Scale

Select four variables, other than what your fellow students have already selected, that could be measured by nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio scale. Classify them by measurement scale and select descriptive statistics that can be used to summarize data. Use the following table when posting your response:

Variable

Level of Measurement

Quantitative or Qualitative

Nominal

Ordinal

Interval

Ratio

*Important Terms

A variable is the general characteristic being observed on a set of people, objects, or events, where each observation varies in kind or degree. Labels or names are used to categorize the distinguishing characteristics of a qualitative variable ; eventually, these attributes may be coded into numbers for purposes of data processing. A quantitative variable assumes meaningful numerical values, and can be further categorized as either discrete or continuous. The possible values for a discrete variable may be counted, whereas a continuous variable can take on any value within an interval.

  • Asking a critical thinking question to inspire further discussion
  • or explain why and how you agree or disagree with the point expressed

*Why Study Math and Statistics?

One of my MBA students who works for a major mobile phone company posted this comment FYI:

Math provides quantitative support for decision-makers in all areas including engineers, analysts in planning offices and public agencies, project management consultants, manufacturing process planners, financial and economic analysts, experts supporting medical/technological diagnosis, and so on and on.

As an engineer in telecom industry for 32 years, there are some specific concepts of math that are commonly used by engineers are:

1. To help understand the physical fundamentals of telecommunications engineering projects.

2. To carry out the technical calculations necessary to plan a project.

3. To help with modeling and simulations to predict the behavior of networks before they are actually built.

4. To help them with business decisions and other ‘non-technical’ aspects of their jobs.
5. Forecasting for future network growth and technology.

Mathematics is an excellent foundation for, and is usually a prerequisite to, all areas of science and engineering. Persons in such areas as anthropology, sociology and psychology, as well as law, business and medicine benefit from a solid background in mathematics and statistics. In addition, mathematical training will help you to better understand science and technology and their effects on our world.
