Wall Street Journal Analysis 2 Instructions

You are required to read and analyze a recent article from the Wall Street Journal, each covering a different topic addressed in the course. You will then write a 1-page review of each article.

Access the Wall Street Journal either through the Liberty University Online Library or through a personal subscription. Each unit will have a different list of topics to choose from.

Module/Week 3 Topic Choices:

Economic growth

Productivity

Improvements in human capital, technology, or resources

Economic institutions (political/economic stability and growth)

Private property rights and economic growth

Make sure to select articles (300 words or more) that address all of the needed information below. Short articles will often not provide you with enough detail to write about. In addition, purely statistical releases of data are not wise selections either. Articles must be no older than 2011. For each article, do the following:

On the top of the page, provide the article citation in current APA format.
On the next line down, type the topic of your articles (from the list above) in all caps and bold format.
In a double-spaced document, briefly explain the author’s purpose for writing the article. One way to understand the author’s purpose is to ask yourself why he or she wrote it. (For example, consider current and future events, politics, or anything else that may have inspired the article.)
Summarize the article, focusing on the discussion of the topic the article addresses. Incorporate relevant economic theory that is present so that discussion of the article content is clear.

Following on from Sigmund Freud’s identification of Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus as an exploration of repressed sexual childhood desires, many critics have gone on to interpret Sophocles’ play in psychological terms. Critics also argue that Shakespeare’s Hamlet exhibits a similar exploration of the psychological relationship between mothers and their sons. In the light of this argument, discuss Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus as explorations of the sexual psychology which potentially underlines the relationships between Hamlet and Gertrude, and Oedipus and Jocasta respectively.

Text and tradition Order Description Choose only one question from the list of 4 questions below and make an argued reflection and comparison of two of the set PRIMARY texts stated in the question. Additional scholarly research is essential for this assessment. You must successfully integrate into your discussion at least 2 secondary critical sources to pass. One of these critical sources must originate from the Norton Critical Editions (if you use Hamlet and/or Oedipus Tyrannus to answer a question) or from the archival repository, JSTOR. The second source may come from any appropriate academic book or journal article of your choice. Non-scholarly sources are not permitted for this task. To do well in this assessment, you will need to demonstrate critical engagement with, and close reading of the primary texts, and an awareness of the key themes of the unit. You also need to use appropriate textual evidence, integrate relevant quotes from the texts and secondary critical readings, and demonstrate a solid command of the academic standards of writing, referencing, and presentation (see pp.8-9 of the Unit Learning Guide). Under no circumstances will resubmissions be permitted. EXTENSIONS * Bankstown Students: email Requests for Extension Forms with supporting documentation to Helen Koukoutsis * Parramatta Students: email Requests for Extension Forms with supporting documentation to Helen Basides A Request for Extension Form can be filled out and submitted with supporting documentation up to three days before the deadline of the assessment. Thereafter, you must submit a Special Consideration Form. QUESTIONS Q1 At the end of Act 1, Scene 3 of Hamlet (Shakespeare, 2011, pp.23-4, lines 114-135), Polonius warns his daughter, Ophelia, to be wary of Hamlet’s declarations of love for her, and commands her to no longer talk or spend time with Hamlet. Ophelia subsequently obeys his wishes. At the end of Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrranus, Oedipus, as a father, is also concerned for his daughters and their future marriageability in the shadow of his own downfall. In the light of this statement, examine the attitude towards women in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus. Q2 Following on from Sigmund Freud’s identification of Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus as an exploration of repressed sexual childhood desires, many critics have gone on to interpret Sophocles’ play in psychological terms. Q3 Rousseau opens his ˜Fifth Walk’ recalling the two months he spent on the Island of St Pierre happily basking in nature and dedicating time to idleness and solitude. Later, he reveals that he was not entirely alone on the Island. Wordsworth’s speaker also opens the poem, ˜Tintern Abbey,’ recalling the secluded scene of the banks of the Wye, which reflect his own secluded thoughts. Later, he, too, reveals the presence of a companion “ his sister Dorothy. In the light of this observation, examine Rousseau’s and Wordsworth’s paradoxical sentiments towards solitude and the self. Q4 Obedience to the gods, the State, and family is central to the individual of the classical Greek period. However, increasing awareness of human force and will disrupt the old ways of thinking, and by the time we get to the Renaissance and Romantic periods, the individual depends less on God for moral guidance, States are under threat from something other than inquisitive old men, and solitude in nature is a cure for the socially corrupted mind. Drawing on one classical and one Renaissance OR Enlightenment OR Romantic text you have studied so far this semester (weeks 2-10), explain how the individual has become more self-sufficient over the two time periods. American Literature is studies by nearly ever student that passes through college. One of the most profound examples of feminism in early American literature is Susan Glaspell’s play “Trifles”. Paper Masters writers custom write research papers and essays on Glaspell’s work and clearly explicate how the play is an excellent example of feminist literature.
Facts about Trifles:

Trifles is a 1916 one-act play written by Susan Glaspell, based on a murder case she had investigated as Des Moines, Iowa reporter.
Widely seen as an early example of feminist drama
Glaspell adapted the play into a short story, “A Jury of Her Peers” in 1917.

Trifles’ Plot
The original case involved the killing of John Hossack. His wife, Margaret, was convicted of the crime although she maintained that an intruder was responsible. Her conviction was overturned on appeal. In the play, the major characters—Minnie and John Wright (murderer and victim)—are never seen on stage. The play revolves around two women, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, who investigate the case. They are portrayed as sympathetic to Mrs. Wright, even though the evidence they uncover points to Minnie’s guilt. They are able to emphasize with her motives, although the male investigators prefer to stick to cold, hard facts and dismiss the “trifles” with which the women concern themselves.

Symbolism in Trifles
The female investigators face the dilemma of protecting Minnie, whom they see as a victim of her husband, or telling the other investigators. Rife with symbolism, Trifles has been widely anthologized. The women ultimately chose to hide evidence as an act of gender loyalty, defying the pompous and self-important male detectives who have dismissed their counterparts because of sexism.
